Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner so that they could be able to survive.
